It’s Friday, Oppo. Time to launch into the weekend.

F-100 Super Sabre and a Zero Length Launch. That must have been one hell of a kick in the pants.

Is the gear down in case it’s a dud and needs to land in the first 500 yards?

I find the asymmetric loadout in both photos unsettling . Symmetry please!

I imagine so. But knowing the S abre’s tendencies at low speed close to the ground you better hope that rocket isn’t a dud.

Interesting. I hadn’t noticed that.

There was a private owner of a sabre years ago who met a similar end trying to take off on a warm day.

I always wonder why the guy in this film didn’t eject.

That is an example of the Sabre Dance, a serious problem with the first generation of the F-100.  As the aircraft approached stall speeds, loss of lift on the tips of the wings caused a violent pitch-up. I’d have to dig a little bit to find out how they fixed it. But swept wing fighters always required higher landing speeds, and getting too slow was a problem.

I’m sure that’s intentional, as part of the test program for the ZLL system. The USAF is nothing if not thorough .

Gear is down because it’s how the plane is supported on the rack.

Same with the F-104

Here’s a long but good  write up about that very crash.

Why he didn’t eject: Brooks, however, was by that time too low and slow to be able to safely eject. Unlike modern “zero-zero” ejection seats, the seats of his era had to be used at a minimum airspeed and altitude in order for an ejection to be survivable.
